Raigad: The Maharashtra Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 4 lakh to the family of those who died in Raigad bus accident. The government also decided to bear the medical expenses of those who were injured in the accident. 25 bodies have been recovered till now, according to the NDRF. At least 33 university staffers from Konkan Agriculture University in Ratnagiri were killed and one miraculously survived when a private bus on a picnic trip plunged into a deep ravine near Poladpur, around 175 km from Mumbai, on Saturday morning.
The staff members were on their way for a weekend picnic to popular tourist destinations of Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani. The sole survivor, Prakash Sawant Desai, who is an Assistant Director at the institute, managed to climb over 500 feet, as there was no mobile phone range in the valley, and called up Dr. Balasaaheb Sawant Konkan Agriculture University authorities and the police.
Desai escaped the tragedy with minor injuries and alerted the university and police authorities of the accident around 10.30 am.
According to Raigad Police Control officer PD Patil, the bus was on way to Mahabaleshwar for a weekend picnic when the tragedy occurred. The bus reportedly lost control near Poladpur, after skidding on wet mud that had collected on the treacherous stretch, IANS reported.
A massive operation was launched by the Raigad police along with National Disaster Response Force teams from Pune and local Mahabaleshwar hikers-trekkers groups to retrieve the bodies from the ravine.
